HEP-CCE: Promoting Computational Excellence

HEP-CCE Coordinators: Salman Habib (Argonne), Kerstin Kleese Van Dam (Brookhaven), Rob Roser (Fermilab), and Peter Nugent (Lawrence Berkeley)

The HEP-CCE is a cross-cutting initiative to promote excellence in high performance computing (HPC) including data-intensive applications, scientific simulations, and data movement and storage. Enhancing connections with DOE’s Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program is an important part of the Center’s activities. This includes promoting future-looking R&D initiatives in exascale architectures and systems, intelligent networking, and new data management and data analysis tools. Although the HEP-CCE is not a service-oriented entity, limited resources are available to support collaborative computing efforts for the HEP community, including a common GitHub repository for open source codes, a website for aggregating useful information, and expertise within and without HEP for solving computational problems via the Expert Forum. The HEP-CCE also sponsors topical workshops and student training programs.

The HEP-CCE is happy to announce a call for applications to its 2018 GRADUATE STUDENT SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM. This program gives graduate students in HEP with a strong interest in computing a chance to work with teams at DOE laboratories on challenging problems currently facing HEP.

Applications to the program should include a CV, a statement of current research, and a short statement on how participation in the program will benefit the student’s current work and future career. A letter of recommendation from the student’s research adviser is also required.

Quantum Computing Summer School at Los Alamos National Laboratory

The Quantum Computing Summer School at Los Alamos National Laboratory is an immersive 10-week curriculum that includes tutorials from world-leading experts in quantum computation as well as one-on-one mentoring from LANL staff scientists who are conducting cutting-edge quantum computing research. Summer school fellowship recipients will be exposed to the theoretical foundations of quantum computation and will become skilled at programming commercial quantum computers, such as those developed by D-Wave Systems and IBM. Ten students will be awarded a fellowship from LANL that covers travel, living expenses in Los Alamos, and salary, with a fellowship value ranging from $7,500 to $13,000, based on academic rank (junior, senior, 1st year graduate student, etc.).

KNL Hackathon 2018

The Computational Science Initiative Division at Brookhaven National Laboratory, in partnership with the HEP Center for Computational Excellence (CCE) and the ECP SOLLVE project, will host the first KNL Hackathon on February 26-March 2, 2018All current and potential users of the Intel Knights Landing-based systems are encouraged to submit an application to participate.
